Synopsis

Newspaper photographer Jimmy Hudson has a high opinion of his skills, a belief shared by his girl friend, Peggy Roberts. She persuades him to think of something besides front-page photos and to quit the newspaper to start a portrait studio. Business is not good, however, and Jimmy comes up with the idea to be a roaming photographer who takes pictures of passersby around town. He starts the Roving Photographic Company with the aid of his friends, Frank and Jack, and begins photographing the citizens of New York with a motion picture camera that can take 500 photographs per magazine of film. Business proceeds well until one day, while shooting people emerging from the Keystone Building at lunch hour, Jimmy unwittingly photographs Steve, a criminal who has just robbed the Atlas Jewelry store and murdered its manager. Jimmy sends Steve his standard card, which gives his address, and asks that the recipient send a quarter to get the picture. Steve replies by sending two henchmen, who give Jimmy a beating and destroy his equipment. Police Sergeant Rorty visits Jimmy after he recovers and explains to him what must have happened. Fortunately for Jimmy, the film is unharmed, and the enterprising photographer realizes that if he can identify which of the 500 visages on the roll of film belongs to the criminal, he will get the $10,000 reward offered by the police. First, Jimmy, Frank and Jack eliminate all of those who work in the building. Then, hoping to get Steve to reveal himself, Jimmy arranges a contest with his former editor Boyle to give away ten dollars to each person who identifies himself from a photo with the face excluded. When Steve and his henchman come, Jimmy delays, allowing time for the police to arrive. The culprits are apprehended before Jimmy is killed, and Jimmy receives the reward. Soon after, Jimmy and Peggy commemorate the beginning of their honeymoon by having their picture taken at Coney Island.
