Synopsis
In 18th-century France, Cartouche, a cooper's son, robs from the rich, gives to the poor, and earns a comfortable income by his thievery. Rebelling against the authority of Malichot, leader of the pickpockets, he is forced to flee Paris and enlist in the army. He joins forces with La Douceur and La Taupe; together they steal their regiment's cashbox, but Cartouche is captured and imprisoned. He escapes, at the same time rescuing Venus, a gypsy pickpocket who becomes his mistress. Cartouche takes over Malichot's organization and turns it into an extremely successful crime syndicate. The vengeful Malichot turns informer, uniting against his rival with de Ferrussac, the cruel Paris chief of police. La Douceur is captured and tortured by de Ferrussac but refuses to betray Cartouche. In retaliation, Cartouche loots the Ottoman Embassy and invades the convent school run by de Ferrussac's beautiful, aristocratic wife, Isabelle. Captivated by Isabelle, Cartouche presents her with Ottoman treasures; finally she agrees to meet him, but her aged confidante betrays them, and de Ferrussac and 50 men descend upon the waiting Cartouche. He is rescued by Venus and his sidekicks, but Venus sacrifices her life to save him. Cartouche pursues the de Ferrussacs at a ball and robs the guests of their finery and jewels. These he drapes over Venus in her hearse, a beautiful, golden coach. Cartouche causes the coach to sink into the Seine and sets out to avenge Venus through continued theft and lawlessness.
