Synopsis

Eddie Dean and his sidekick Ezra act as scouts for a wagon train of homesteaders heading to Red Rock City. While camped one night, the train is held up by outlaw Cherokee and his partners Reno and Killer. Without firing a shot, Eddie convinces Cherokee to leave and later explains that Cherokee and his brother were framed by outlaw Bart Barton. Cherokee's brother was killed during their escape, and now Cherokee searches for Barton, wanting to avenge his brother's death. In private, Cherokee tells his men that Eddie once saved his life. When the train reaches Red Rock City, the settlers are informed that no land is available for homesteading. With the help of crooked judge Silas Black, entrepreneur Joe King has illegally bought all the farm land and offers to rent it to the homesteaders in exchange for half their profits. When Jim Bristol, the leader of the wagon train, objects to this arrangement, Poker Face, one of King's men, kills him. Even though Bristol was not wearing a gun, Poker Face claims self-defense and Black pronounces him innocent. In the meantime, Eddie has learned that his friend, the town's marshal, is dead, and has agreed to take his place. Eddie realizes that he will need some allies to fight King, so when Cherokee and his men ride into town, Eddie arrests them and then swears in all three men as deputies. Because he once killed a man in self-defense, Eddie is opposed to the use of guns, even on the side of good. With Cherokee to support him, however, Eddie arrests Poker Face for Bristol's murder and sends for a federal investigator. Eddie is in love with Bristol's daughter Paula and promises her that he will look into King's ownership of the land. After Killer accepts King's bribe and releases Poker Face from jail, Poker Face kills him. Eddie and Ezra hunt down Poker Face and recapture him. Eddie then blows open Black's safe and discovers proof of King's illegal dealings. King summons Barton and his gang, but with the help of Eddie, Ezra and Reno, Cherokee kills Barton and avenges his brother. After King and his men are defeated, Cherokee is pardoned by the governor and promises Eddie that he will go straight. Eddie rides off to join Paula and the homesteaders, who now have access to the farmland.
