Synopsis

In 1970 a motorcycle gang wearing Confederate insignia terrorize a town, forcing a woman to undress, and beating the black sheriff. The narrator attempts to explain their behavior, and, as the scene shifts to 1870, a gang of former Confederate marauders, Cain's Cutthroats, murder several Union soldiers, rob their strongbox, and mutilate one Yankee. They return to their wartime leader, Justice Cain, who is now a married homesteader, and ask him to lead the gang once more. When he refuses, they rape and kill Cain's black wife and shoot him and his son. Cain joins forces with bounty hunter Preacher Sims to track down the gang. One by one, members of the gang are found and killed, Sims keeping their heads in brine to preserve them for the reward. Cain becomes so obsessed with vengeance that Sims finally leaves him. When he tries to interfere with the execution of the gang's leader, Cain is shot by soldiers.
