Synopsis

In 52 B. C. Emperor Julius Caesar, anxious to secure more troops to suppress the rebellion in Gaul, is rejected by the senate opposition under the leadership of Cicero. Caesar subsequently orders Publia, his adopted ward, to marry Quintus Cicero, the senator's brother and a Roman soldier fighting in Gaul. Publia and her lover Claudius Valerian, Caesar's messenger, are captured by Vercingetorix, the Gaul patriot leader, but Queen Astrid, ally and jealous mistress of Vercingetorix, frees them. Vercingetorix burns the Gallic towns in Caesar's path to prevent him from living off the land and attacks the besieged Roman legions in Alesia. When Caesar's reinforcements, alerted by Publia and Claudius, arrive, Astrid is killed in battle, and Vercingetorix is forced to surrender.
