Synopsis
While driving along a lonely country road one evening, Jane Lindstrom has a flat tire and seeks help at a gloomy mansion. She is greeted by Caligari, a bearded stranger who suggests that she spend the night. After meeting the other guests in the bizarre house, she is drugged and then questioned by her host. Realizing that she is a prisoner and is being spied upon, Jane makes an unsuccessful attempt to escape. Her only visitor is a young man, Mark, who seems to love her but is unable to stay at the house and is apparently unwilling to help her leave. In seemingly rapid succession, the young woman is subjected to a series of violent shocks in which she and the other guests are tortured and then later consoled by Paul, a sympathetic doctor who bears a marked resemblance to the sadistic Caligari. Eventually, Jane is forced into a final nerve-shattering encounter with her captor. She awakens to the realization that she is a middle-aged woman undergoing treatment in a mental institution. Exhausted, but cured of her fantasies, she is taken home by her devoted and loving son--Mark.
