Synopsis
During the 1910 Mexican revolution, a band of guerrillas led by El Chuncho attack a train carrying government arms, troops, and munitions. Bill Tate, an American passenger, helps the revolutionaries by killing the train's engineer. El Chuncho then seizes the munitions and rides off, taking along Tate, whom he has been told is a criminal awaiting execution. With Tate now part of his rebel army, El Chuncho steals more weapons and sets out to sell them to General Elias of the revolutionary army. En route the guerrillas stop at San Miguel, a revolutionary stronghold that is facing a military attack. Tate and several other guerrillas, convinced that the town will be destroyed, desert their leader. El Chuncho is persuaded to leave and proceeds to General Elias's camp with the weapons. At the general's headquarters, however, El Chuncho is accused of treason and sentenced to death. Accepting his fate, El Chuncho asks that he be executed by his brother El Santo, a religious fanatic. But Tate kills El Santo and shoots General Elias with a golden bullet, thereby revealing that he was hired by the Mexican government to kill the revolutionary general. Tate receives a reward and offers to share it with El Chuncho, provided the latter will help to form a civil union. El Chuncho refuses to compromise his principles, however, and while singing a revolutionary hymn, he kills the startled American.
