Synopsis

In 1881 Rep Marlowe, a ruthless land baron, has bought up most of the area surrounding the small town of Gloryhole, Montana, and is driving out the homesteaders by building a dam to cut off their water supply. Opposing him is Montana territorial marshal Chaddock, a widowed former army scout with a 10-year-old halfbreed son. By promising to open the dam, Chaddock manages to persuade some of the settlers, particularly the Cody family, to postpone their move to Oregon. Chaddock also wins the support of one-time schoolteacher Nora Johnson, who has become an embittered saloon woman after being assaulted by a group of miners. Although Chaddock blows up the dam, young Jimmy Cody is killed, and Chaddock is bitten by a rattlesnake. While he is recuperating at the Cody ranch, Marlowe and his henchman Patch, who had served with Chaddock in the army before being dishonorably discharged, make plans to force the settlers out of town by shooting Chaddock. But, when Chaddock returns to town to face Marlowe and his men, some of the townspeople support him. In the final gun battle, Marlowe and Patch are killed, and although Chaddock is wounded, peace is restored to the valley.
