Synopsis

Tom Wade, a detective with the Cattle Men's Protective Association of San Miguel, California, is about to leave his job and go to New York when he receives a telegram from his sister-in-law Annie saying that his brother Ed, who has disappeared, is suspected of robbing and killing bank president Lem Chandler. Tom goes to Annie and, while Sheriff Bain investigates the crime, secretly does some detective work on his own. When he finds a woman sneaking around Annie's house, he follows her and discovers that she is Celia Chandler, daughter of the bank president, who is trying to find Ed and send him to jail. Hoping to discover who the real murderers are, Tom discovers unusual tire track impressions near the crime site. A local hobo, who is frequently incarcerated, discovers a car with the unusual tires, but doesn't know to whom it belongs. Meanwhile, Ed is being held prisoner in a deserted shack by a gang headed by Celia's fiancé, Jeff Tracy, who seeming was a trusted friend of her father, but who actually masterminded the robbery and Chandler's murder. When they are away, Ed starts a newspaper fire with a cigarette and attracts the attention of Celia, who now realizes that Ed is innocent. When Tracy and his men return with Tom, whom they have captured, Celia hides while they reveal their plans. With the help of the sheriff and his hobo prisoner-turned-deputy, the Tracy gang is captured, Ed is reunited with his wife, Celia and Tom decide that they like each other after all, and the hobo decides that he likes being a prisoner better than being a deputy.

Notes

Although a copyright statement appeared on the opening title card, it is not included in the catalog of copyright entries. This film is listed in release charts in Motion Picture Herald for June 30, 1937, however, no review has been located prior to the one in Variety on December 7, 1938 when it was noted that the film was opening in Lincoln, NE that week. In addition, a Hollywood Reporter production chart and a news item about the film's production appeared in late August and early September 1937 respectively, thus refuting the June 1937 release date in Motion Picture Herald and Motion Picture Almanac. As a news item in Film Daily on June 18, 1937 noted that the film was to "start" on Monday, the production was evidently delayed until late August. According to Hollywood Reporter, star Tom Tyler was scheduled to marry the evening that the film was completed and was to join the Wallace Bros. Circus the next day. Modern sources include George Morrell in the cast.
