Synopsis

The Atomic Energy Commission sends three Americans, naturalist Paul Henderson, his wife, Carla, and Peace Corpsman Jim Farrel, to Blood Island in the Pacific to investigate rumors of plant and animal mutations caused by atomic radiation. They are shocked when they see the severed head and arm of a girl, although the native chief insists that the death was accidental. After they become the houseguests of epileptic landowner Stephen Powers, several strange phenomena are observed by the visiting party: man-eating trees and vines, a ferocious cockroach, a vicious butterfly, and a monster which devours nude virgins sacrificed by the natives. When Alma, a lovely native girl to whom Jim is attracted, is chosen as the monster's next victim, Jim convinces the villagers that the mutants must be destroyed. The beast kills Carla when she approaches it to satisfy her sexual desires; and the natives finally consent to help when the monster kills Paul. They trap the monster in a bamboo hut, set it afire, and watch the mutated body of Stephen Powers emerge.
