Synopsis

While Mrs. O'Meara's adopted seventeen-year-old son Tommy, works diligently as a delivery boy, her own son Eddie spends his days in a pool hall under the influence of a gang of thieves led by Mike Hearn. On the night of Eddie's birthday, while his mother waits at home with a birthday cake, Eddie attempts to rob a fur warehouse for Hearn. When the police show up, Eddie races home in a hot car that is filled with furs. Tommy offers to drive the car out of town, but is chased by the police and caught. Tommy is brought in along with another of Hearn's boys, "Knuckles" Ryan, but neither will talk, and they are sentenced to four years in the state industrial school. When Eddie visits Tommy at the reformatory, his adopted brother warns him not to break his mother's heart or face exposure. Although Eddie tells Hearn he has a legitimate job, Hearn refuses to let him quit his services. Meanwhile, at the reformatory, Owens, a new, kindly doctor, recommends farm work for Tommy and his fellow recruits and befriends Tommy. Owens then makes Tommy his assistant, confessing he spent two years in a reform school himself. After Eddie is brought in to the reformatory following a gas station heist, Hearn schemes to "spring" his boys. Because Hearn has threatened to harm Eddie's mother if he talks, Eddie keeps quiet. When word about the boys's impending break-out leaks to tough warden Barnes, he interrogates Eddie and beats him. Owens goes with Tommy to nurse Eddie's wounds, and is attacked by Tommy and the boys who then escape. At the prison gate, Hearn's men, Pete and Spike, wait in a car as Tommy and Knuckles escape. Tommy pretends to be in league with Hearn, then calls Owens, who arranges to have the police waiting in a truck during a heist. The police arrest the robbers, while Tommy gets away and reports to Hearn. Knuckles, suspicious, holds Tommy hostage at gunpoint until the police arrive. With Tommy's help, Hearn is arrested. Later, on his birthday, Tommy comes home to Mrs. O'Meara and a birthday cake. Owens and Eddie then surprise them with news of Eddie's parole. Owens holds Tommy as Eddie gives him his birthday spankings.
