Synopsis
Jonno, jealous of his stepfather, Tom, invents stories and makes mischief to attract attention. As the family travels by steamer along the Adriatic Coast, Jonno sees a man fall into the water and claims he was pushed. The man is rescued and explains that he simply had too much to drink, and Jonno receives a scolding. The family arrives at the small resort town of Budva, and the boy again attracts attention by freeing a tame bear. During their holiday Clare and Tom become friendly with Susie and her boyfriend, Mike, a ne'er-do-well who relies on his great charm and sex appeal to get along. Mike receives a visit from Marianne, a former girl friend who intends to tell the police about a sum of money he took from her. Trailing Mike as he chases after Marianne to stop her, Jonno stumbles over her corpse. No one believes Jonno's story, however, because the body cannot be found and because of his earlier lie. When Jonno's parents go to a dance one night, Mike breaks into the boy's room, but Jonno escapes, pursued through the town by the murderer. Clare and Tom discover Jonno's disappearance, and the police begin a search for him after Susie confirms Mike's guilt in the murder. Mike catches Jonno in a citadel overlooking the sea and uses the boy as a shield. At last, however, he thrusts Jonno into Tom's arms and falls to his death on the rocks below.
