Synopsis
Rodeo rider Larry Day is arrested after being mistaken for Gary Elliott, his exact double and the murderer of Lafe Turner's daughter. Sheriff Lem Morrison in Coronado County vouches for Elliott, and Larry is sentenced to hang. With the help of his foster father, Pop Greer, Larry escapes and hides with his friend Danny. Pop has lured Elliott to Danny's place, where Danny drugs him so he will sleep. Larry then puts on Elliott's clothes and hides when Sheriff Blane arrives. When the sheriff tries to arrest the awakened Elliott, believing that he is Larry, Elliott becomes hysterical and the sheriff is forced to shoot him. Larry and Pop arrange to meet again, after Larry gets into Elliott's ranch. On his way to the ranch, Larry saves Starr Landerson from her runaway buckboard, but falls over a cliff and is knocked unconscious. He revives at the Elliott ranch, where he is again mistaken for Elliott, and pretends to have amnesia so he can learn about the ranch and Elliott's affiliates. He discovers that Sheriff Morrison and Ed Randall are Elliott's best friends, and that Elliott held the mortgage on Starr's ranch. Instead of forcing Starr off her land as Elliott would do, Larry renews the mortgage, causing suspicion. Unknown to Larry, Elliott had plotted with his friends to take Starr's land, which they believe contains gold. Although Pop Greer is using the alias "Ike Brown," his appearance leads the local doctor to realize who "Elliott" really is. Elliott's ranchhands also realize the ruse after they see Larry, an experienced rider, break a bronco, which could never have been broken by Elliott. Morrison threatens to reveal that Elliott's original alibi was a lie if Larry does not cooperate. Turner realizes that Larry is not his daughter's murderer and, unaware of Elliott's death and Larry's impersonation, tries to kill Larry, believing him to be Elliott. He is unsuccessful, however, and is informed of Larry's ruse. After a fight between a posse headed by Larry and cattle rustlers, one of the rustlers confesses that Randall and Morrison are the heads of the gang, and both men are arrested. Finally, Larry and Starr profess their love for each other.
