Synopsis

Tom Bryant and his partner, Burt Pennycracker, are on their way to Bullion City to open a newspaper when they are attacked by two bandits. Tom overpowers one of them and takes him to Bullion City sheriff, Jeff Salter. In the town saloon, Tom is jumped by a group of men as Salter watches impassively before finally intervening. The bandit, whom Tom brought into town, is Steve, one of Salter's deputies, as are the thugs in the saloon. Tom agrees to abide by Salter's decision as to whether to jail Steve, but the sheriff does arrest Steve, only to arrange secretly for his escape later. Salter misleads the search posse, then lies in wait for the unsuspecting Steve, and kills him. After Salter advises Tom and Burt not to cause any trouble with their newspaper, his deputy, Fred Wallace, tells Tom that murders and robberies are on the rise in town, many occurring coincidentally while he is away. Tom's suspicions of corruption within the town's law enforcement grow when Salter accuses homesteader Martha Hadley of Steve's murder, after she is discovered standing over his dead body. Martha is cleared of the charges, but thereafter, lawlessness increases throughout the town. Tom writes a number of editorials broadly hinting at Salter's criminal complicity. Some time later, Mike Calhoun, an emporium operator, and his beautiful daughter Linda come into town so that Calhoun can close his business. Linda is interested in Tom, who is distracted from the possible romance when he notices Salter sending away Wallace just as the Express readies a large gold shipment for delivery. Tom suspects that Salter plans to rob the shipment, so he takes the money himself for safe keeping. Tom then learns that the Calhouns will carry a large sum of money as they leave town on the stagecoach. Knowing that Salter will try to rob the coach, Tom and Wallace plan a trap and they foil the gang. When Salter then tries to accuse Tom of being the mastermind behind the gold and stagecoach heists, one of his henchmen breaks down and confesses. Wallace is then made the new sheriff and law and order returns to Bullion City.
