Synopsis
Newspaper columnist Ann Thompson, who is engaged to struggling lawyer Roger Anderson, becomes angry when a newspaper photograph reveals that Roger was at a party with socialite Mona Brooks when he had said he was in a business meeting. When Roger tries to apologize, Ann refuses to speak to him, so he lures her away from the paper by a ruse, making her angrier than before. Later, Roger captures Dixie Nelson after Nelson kills David Turner, a newspaperman and a witness for the state against the Civic League, a crooked organization. After hearing about Roger's deed, Ann, who has been assigned to do a column on him, goes by his boardinghouse, where his landlady, Mrs. Riley, assures her that he is unhurt. Hoping to garner Ann's sympathy, however, Roger has wrapped himself in bandages, but only succeeds in irritating her. Unknown to Roger, William Brooks, Mona's father, is in league with Nelson and intends to help him escape from prison so that his own participation in the League will not be exposed. Convinced that Roger is not very bright, Brooks pressures the district attorney to appoint Roger special prosecutor. To her disgust, Ann is assigned to cover his efforts. Roger's first step is to question Carol Turner, the dead man's daughter. She is unwilling to talk and blames people like Roger for her father's death. Hoping that she will change her mind, Roger, who will be attending a party at the Brooks home, gives her Brooks's phone number and is startled by her reaction. Later, during the party, Carol shoots Brooks, wounding him. Nearby, Roger discovers a woman's footprints and his calling card and realizes that Carol must have been the assailant. Roger hurries to her apartment, but she has already left. Meanwhile, the paper attacks Roger for doing nothing to catch the person who shot Brooks. When Ann learns that Roger is looking for Carol, she obtains her new address through a ruse and anonymously telephones Roger. Roger convinces Carol to talk, and she exposes Brooks and shows him a black book in which Brooks recorded all the payoffs he received. Brooks is indicted as the head of the crime syndicate, but when Roger presents the book as evidence, he discovers that the relevant pages have been removed by his secretary, Cubby Carson, who is secretly in league with Brooks. After the case is dismissed, Ann tries to convince Roger not to give up. Roger suspects that Nelson could be scared into talking and has him brought to his office. When the police are then unable to find Nelson, they believe that Roger has been kidnapped. Brooks, meanwhile, orders his men to find Nelson and Roger and kill them both. Nelson agrees to implicate Brooks, but when he and Roger arrive at Brooks's home, he and Brooks escape in Roger's car. Brooks's men spot the car and, thinking that Roger and Nelson are inside, kill both of the occupants. Later, Carol agrees to testify and Brooks's killers are captured. Roger is again a hero and is reconciled with Ann.
