Synopsis

In the African jungle, a monkey examines a diary, dated 1939, in which the dying author, Cody Casson, writes of his concern for Bomba, a seven-year-old boy who will soon be left all alone. Bomba, now a young man, returns to his home in the trees and playfully chases the monkey away, then watches in horror as a large, black panther kills his pet. Bomba sets off in pursuit of the panther, which attacks and kills a native sentry. Meanwhile, Canadian Rob Maitland, who plans to build a plantation in the jungle, complains to his native aide Eli that the crew he has hired to clear the foliage is unwilling to work. Scotsman Andy Barnes, commissioner of the territory, explains that the natives believe that cutting down the trees will make the jungle spirits angry and bring bad luck. Despite Andy's warnings, Rob announces his intention to burn down a section of the jungle for development. Later, while Bomba is tracking the panther, he comes across Luke, a native who has been mauled by the beast, and they set off to find help. Meanwhile, Eli brings a new group of workers to Andy's house, but when they see Losana, maid to Rob's sister Judy, they grow uneasy, saying that the spirit of a jungle cat lives in her. Bomba arrives with the wounded Luke, and Andy tells Rob that Bomba's parents died when he was a baby, and that Bomba was taken in by scientist Cody Casson. Bomba is infatuated with Judy, who is pining for civilization, and offers to show her the jungle's many beautiful sights. The panther later strikes again, moments before Losana suddenly appears. Rob reaches for his gun, but the natives say the panther is a "taboo cat" and must not be harmed. Fearing that Bomba is going to kill the panther and anger the jungle spirits, a group of natives attack him, but Bomba fights them off and continues his pursuit. That night, after hearing the panther nearby, Bomba encounters the seductive Losana in the jungle, and when he escorts her home, Judy becomes jealous. The next day, as Rob starts his fire, the natives desert him, and a powerful wind storm sends the flames racing through the jungle. Bomba and Judy take refuge in a cave, only to find the panther crouched in the darkness. After a fierce struggle, Bomba manages to kill the panther, and when he and Judy emerge from the cave, the fire has stopped. Later, Rob reproaches himself for his reckless actions and says he will leave Africa, but Judy, who now appreciates what the jungle has to offer, encourages him to see his project through. Bomba says goodbye to Judy and returns to his home at the edge of the jungle.
