Synopsis
In 1954, British Army Lance-Bombardier Terry Evans is put in command of a small squadron of men in Germany assigned to guard an obsolete Bofors gun. Evans, who is scheduled to return to England the following day for review by the War Office Selection Board, is aware that his chance for a commission rests upon his having a clean record, and he faces this unexpected assignment with apprehension. One of the gunners under his command, Danny O'Rourke, is a loud and cynical Irish anarchist; he chooses the eve of his 30th birthday to mount a furious attack against the establishment in general and Evans in particular. Enraged by Evans' middle-class platitudes about responsibility, O'Rourke defiantly leaves his post, gets drunk, chops down the company flagpole, and jumps out of a window in an abortive suicide attempt. Convinced that he is acting purely out of concern for O'Rourke, Evans covers up for him and refuses to file a report on the incident, but Flynn, another gunner, forces Evans to face the fact that the real reason for his action is not O'Rourke's welfare but a selfish desire to protect his own service record. At midnight, O'Rourke stabs himself with a bayonet, killing himself and destroying Evans' career.
