Synopsis

On their first wedding anniversary, Diana gives Lew a black cat to add to his menagerie. Lew comes to believe that the cat is a reincarnation of his hated father, and one day, after a drinking bout, he gouges out one of its eyes. Lew eventually kills the cat, and that night the house burns down. Learning that the house was not insured, Lew goes berserk and is sent to a sanitarium for psychiatric care. Upon his release, he returns to Diana and brings home a stray black cat. Diana notices that this cat also has a bad eye, and Lew begins to have nightmares. Fearing that he is being haunted by it, Lew attacks the cat but accidentally kills Diana. Lew walls up her body in the cellar, but the former housekeeper, Lillith, alerts the police, who arrive and find nothing until a meow is heard coming from behind the wall. The police tear it down and find Diana's body and the live cat. Lew escapes in his car, sees a black cat in the road, and is killed when he crashes to avoid the animal.
