Billy the Kid's Range War

Sheriff Black and a marshal named Jeff, who has been deputized solely so he can prove that his friend, Billy the Kid, did not murder businessman Gorham, as he has been accused, are chasing a man they believe to be Billy through the hills. The real Billy is knocked out by the impostor, after which the impostor escapes on Billy's pinto horse. Black and Jeff arrest Billy but when Billy's pal, Fuzzy Q. Jones, fires a well-aimed slingshot at Black, Billy uses the distraction to escape on the impostor's horse. Billy then is blamed for an ensuing crime spree. In the town of Lincoln, meanwhile, Jeff and Fuzzy consult with attorney Dave Hendrix over a letter Jeff received from Gorham's daughter Ellen. In her letter Ellen explains that her father, who owned a freight company, was promised a government mail contract if he built a road from West City to Pebble Creek, and consequently proved that a cross-country line would be practical. His roadwork was consistently sabotaged, however, and after he received a death threat, his friend Leonard urged him to seek legal advice in Lincoln. Jeff now wonders why Billy has been connected to Gorham's murder and is unaware that in a Lincoln cantina, Black is meeting with Leonard and a man name Williams, who wants to foil Gorham's road so he will get a government shipping contract for his steamboat line. During the meeting, Leonard protests Gorham's murder but Williams, who has also killed Gorham's foreman and has sent for outlaw Ab Jenkins to take over as foreman, is unconcerned as Leonard is now Ellen's guardian. Williams expects Leonard to make sure that Jenkins is hired and continues to sabotage the work. Cantina worker Romero overhears the conversation and rides to Billy and Fuzzy's hiding place to warn them. Billy manages to kidnap Jenkins, and impersonates him using his introduction letter from Williams. Leonard is surprised when Billy actually speeds up the progress on the road, but Billy claims that he is postponing his sabotage until they are close to the end. Jeff then finds Billy and arrests him for his own protection. Williams plans to break Billy out of jail as soon as he needs to use him for an alibi, but Fuzzy beats him to it. Fuzzy then allows Jenkins to escape, and Billy follows him to the cantina. There, Leonard and Williams realize that they have been working with an impostor. Williams now plans to kill Ellen, as Leonard has been unable to convince her to sell the business. Leonard, whom Williams is blackmailing, refuses to cooperate, however, and is murdered that night by Williams' cohort, Buck. Ellen sees Buck escape on a pinto and mistakes him for Billy, who she still thinks killed her father. Later, distraught over the loss of her father and her guardian, Ellen decides to sell the business to Williams. Billy rides up just before she signs the bill of sale, and when Buck also rides up on the pinto, Ellen realizes she was wrong about Billy. Buck is revealed as the impostor, but is shot by Williams before he can confess to the frame-up. Williams threatens to dynamite the new road if Ellen does not sign, but Fuzzy bursts in and takes the outlaws hostage, while Billy races to prevent the explosion. With the saboteurs arrested, Billy and Fuzzy continue working on the road until it is finished. Ellen wins the government contract and asks Billy, Jeff and Fuzzy to help run the stage line. Although they eagerly accept the offer, they are forced to leave because a posse is now after them for another crime for which they are blameless.
