Synopsis
Billy the Kid, who has been unfairly labeled a notorious criminal, and his friends, Fuzzy Jones and Jeff Walker, are about to be hanged for a murder they did not commit. They escape with the help of an anonymous group of outlaws who, unknown to Billy and his friends, have been impersonating them and framing them for their crimes. When Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff witness a shootout between the look-alikes and Sheriff Masters, they rescue the wounded Masters and convince him that they are innocent. Masters informs them that the outlaws have been working out of Mesa City. Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff arrive in Mesa City just as Stanton, who is the mastermind behind the outlaws, has engineered the murder of the sheriff, who had information connecting him to recent robberies. While Fuzzy and Jeff arrest two of Stanton's thugs, Billy confronts gang member Red Barton and knocks him out. Stanton offers to sell Billy protection after his partner in crime, the local corrupt judge, makes Barton the new sheriff, but Billy refuses his offer. When Stanton's gang, dressed as Billy and his friends, rob the stagecoach driven by Dave, the murdered sheriff's brother, Dave becomes convinced that Billy was behind his brother's murder. After Jeff and Fuzzy capture the robbers, however, they reclaim the strongbox, and Dave's sister Sally proves that Billy was with her when the stagecoach was being robbed. Billy then conceives of a plan to prove his innocence, which involves Sheriff Masters, who has come to Mesa City. Masters enlists the help of a still-suspicious Dave in capturing Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff. Outside of town, however, Masters reveals his real intention to the three friends: he wants their help in arresting Stanton and his gang, after which McConnell, an honest judge, will come to town to try the outlaws. When Stanton and his gang attack the stagecoach carrying Judge McConnell, they are surprised by the appearance of Billy, Fuzzy and Jeff within the coach. Montana, one of the impersonators, confesses that Stanton murdered the rancher, the crime for which Billy and his friends had been convicted. Stanton, who has ridden away, shoots Montana in the back, but Billy retrieves the outlaw and Masters arrests the whole gang. The outlaws are convicted, and Masters, now the sheriff of Mesa City, deputizes Dave.
