Synopsis
Lucien Ménard, a newly hired zoo keeper, is assigned to take care of a bear named Gôcha. At first he is afraid of the bear and Chappuis, the tyrannical boss at the zoo, but Ménard's fears evaporate when he discovers that Gôcha can speak. He learns that the fearsome attitude of the bear is merely a result of his loneliness. Ménard teaches Gôcha to read and to play cards, and he arranges for him to spend a night with his true love, a polar bear in the next cage. Chappuis finds out about the talking bear, but no one believes him, and he is fired for drunkenness. Ménard replaces him as head zoo keeper and arranges for Gôcha to be returned to the wild.
