Synopsis

After Ted Clark rescues pickpocket Danny from a mob, he returns a pocketbook to its rightful owner, Ann Dawson. A letter in her wallet proves that a man named Jim Grant is guilty of a crime for which her brother has been sentenced to death. Ted and Danny help Ann escape Grant's men, who want the document for themselves. While taking the information to the governor, who is on a hunting trip in Idlewild, the trio elude their pursuers and capture Grant after a fight that transpires one mile up in an airplane. Grant manages to escape and attempts to delay the governor, but Ted and Danny guess Grant's plan and go to the rescue. During a shootout, Grant is killed and his gang rounded up. Ann gives the letter to the governor, thereby exonerating her brother, and Ted and Ann declare their mutual love.

Notes

The Film Daily review notes that a large portion of the film's exteriors were shot on location at United Airport in Burbank, CA. According to the film's pressbook, the plot of Bars of Hate was suggested by incidents surrounding the celebrated Eccles Foster murder case in Chicago during the 1880s. Charles Norman was about to be hanged for the crime when Illinois governor John Peter Altgeld pardoned him. Shortly after, a letter proved that Michael Brady was the actual killer.
