Synopsis
Michele, a simple Sardinian peasant who wants nothing more than to tend his flock of sheep, suddenly finds himself implicated in the robbery of a herd of swine and the murder of a policeman when the bandits responsible for the crimes stop for a rest at his cottage. Following their departure, Michele is questioned by the police; but he refuses to turn informer. Terrified that he will lose his sheep and his only means of existence, he takes his 12-year-old brother, Peppeddu, and drives his flock across the bleak mountains in a desperate attempt to survive. They encounter drought and thinning vegetation, until one by one, the sheep die. Peppeddu becomes ill, and Michele takes him to the nearest village. Penniless and with no employment available, Michele steals a flock of sheep belonging to another peasant and becomes one of the bandits of Orgosolo.
