Synopsis

In 1863, Isami Kondo and eight of his fencing students travel to Kyoto to defend the Tokugawa Shogunate, which is under heavy attack from radicals who wish to restore the emperor to power. In Kyoto, Kondo obtains permission to set up the Shinsen Group, a paramilitary organization of assassins with severe rules for its members. Kamo Serizawa, co-leader of the group with Kondo, cracks under the pressure, and when he turns to drinking and oversteps the group's restrictions on the use of violence, Kondo is forced to purge him from the group. The Shinsen's prestige is restored when it breaks up a plot to burn the city and abduct the emperor. Public opinion continues to turn against the Shogunate, however; Kondo is finally branded a traitor and executed in 1868.
