Notes

According to reviews and contemporary program notes for the film, Tales was shot in 1969 but was first exhibited in 1971 in New York City as part of the Whitney Museum of American Art's New American Filmmaker series. The film was shown in Los Angeles at the Los Feliz Theater in 1973, under the sponsorship of the L.A. Film Society.
As pointed out in reviews, while the anonymous persons interviewed for the film discussed intimate details of their sex lives, the material was presented in a non-exploitative way. The Village Voice reviewer also pointed out that, during the second half of the film, producer-director Cassandra Gerstein cut back and forth among the several stories presented.
According to contemporary information, the film was shot with an all-female crew, although the New York Times review credits Bill Snyder as the producer. Modern sources credit Jill Godmilow with the co-direction of the film, although available contemporary sources only name Gerstein. Godmilow attained prominence with several later documentaries, including the highly regarded Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman, about female conductor Antonia Brico, which Godmilow co-directed with folk singer-songwriter Judy Collins.
