Synopsis
Arturo, a 16-year-old boy who is ignorant of the world beyond his home, the island of Procida in the Bay of Naples, lives alone in his father's huge home while waiting for him to return from one of his frequent wanderings. Wilhelm, his father, returns and brings with him a lovely wife, Nunziata, who is barely older than Arturo. Arturo adores Wilhelm, and at first he regards Nunziata as an interloper, but they soon become good friends. His father leaves again, and when the young wife gives birth to a child, Arturo finds that his affection for her has turned to love. However, since the pious Nunziata treats him only as a son, he succumbs to the charms of a seductive village woman, Teresa, whose husband has abandoned her. Wilhelm once more returns, this time on the same ship as Tonino, a young prisoner at the island penitentiary, who refers to Arturo's father as "Pretty Boy" and reveals that Wilhelm has arranged to help him escape. Enraged at the homosexual insinuation, Arturo attacks Tonino but is unmercifully beaten by the stronger man. Wilhelm eventually intervenes to protect his son. After Tonino has gone, Arturo realizes that his father is lost to him forever, and he leaves the island.
