Synopsis

In 1898, returning soldier Johnnie Trent, a member of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, receives a hero's welcome in San Francisco, then is asked by an old friend, Doc Wallace, to go back to his family's ranch in Arizona, as his father Dan is gravely ill. Though initially hesitant, Johnnie agrees and heads south with his old comrade, Aloysius "Kansas" Cobb. The two are nearly killed, however, by Martha Brooks, Dan's nurse, when they attempt to enter the ranch by a closed trail. Meanwhile, the ill Dan is visited by land baron Ace Vincent, and accuses him of rustling his cattle in an attempt to force the old rancher to sell his land, which contains the water rights to the area. Although he saves his father's life when Ace tries to shoot him, Johnnie is informed by Dan that he is not wanted at the ranch and that he has been disinherited, as Dan has legally adopted Wayne Carson, the ranch's foreman, and plans to made him his sole heir. That night, Johnnie falsely accuses Wayne of taking advantage of his father, but he later admits to Martha that he only wanted to see if Wayne was honest. Meanwhile, Doc and Ace, who are secret partners, plot to purchase the Trent ranch from Johnnie upon his father's "natural" death. Thinking that Ace is planning to blow up the ranch's dam, Wayne and his men ride off to protect their water, but Johnnie and Kansas, realizing that the dam is a diversion, ride in the other direction to protect the Trents' latest cattle shipment. Despite being outnumbered, Johnnie and Kansas are able to drive off the rustlers. Ace next tries to murder Dan, but Martha throws a water pitcher at the would-be assassin, and the old rancher merely suffers a gunshot wound in the arm. Ace is then shot as he makes his escape, and he is later captured by Johnnie and Wayne while receiving medical treatment from Doc. The crooked physician, afraid that his partner will turn him in, sneaks Ace a gun, which he uses in an attempted jailbreak. Learning that his gun was loaded with blanks, the dying Ace, having been mortally wounded by Wayne, confesses all. After the ensuing shootout and fight, Doc and his men are captured. With Johnnie and his father now reconciled, only one question remains: Which brother will marry Martha?
