Synopsis

Andy, the mentally retarded 40-year-old son of Greek immigrants, is a trial to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cliadakis, and for that reason they decide to send him to an institution. Mrs. Cliadakis gives Andy money to buy a new suit, but he wanders through New York and winds up in a bar. He is a powerful man, having once been a ship's fireman, and when a group of customers in the bar begin to jeer at him, he takes them on in a fight. Later, a prostitute takes Andy home with her. Andy goes home the next morning, and his worried parents realize that Andy needs love, not an institution. They decide to move to the suburbs so that he will have greater freedom and a chance to spend time outdoors.
