Synopsis
Three couples from Rome meet on a train bound for Monte Carlo. Remo and Marina, assistants in a hairdressing shop, hope to win enough money to open their own business. Wealthy manufacturer Alberto Franzetti, a gambling addict with a "sure-fire" winning system, neglects his wife, Eleonora, in his concentration on the gaming tables. Quirino and Giovanna Filonzi, poor newspaper vendors, have found a valuable dog and are returning it to a wealthy old woman for a reward. Quirino soon discovers that the old woman has been robbed and murdered, and, in his frantic departure from the scene of the crime, he leaves evidence which implicates all three couples and leads to his arrest. Meanwhile, Remo and Alberto lose heavily at the casino, while Eleonora finds diversion with a local man-about-town. Desperate for funds, Remo steals a suitcase; then discovers the old woman's body inside and makes a frenzied attempt to dispose of the evidence before he, too, is arrested. Finally, Alberto attracts the suspicions of the police commissioner and is arrested in turn. The three are charged with being accomplices in the crime, and they incriminate one another as each attempts to find an alibi. The police commissioner finally discovers that the old woman's housekeeper and butler killed their employer. Returning to Rome after their release, the three couples are the only witnesses to another murder. ...
