Synopsis

After bandits commanded by gambler Hatch Bolton attack his supply train, Curley Thompson discovers a riderless horse. In town, Walter Gordon, the deputy sheriff, recognizes the horse as belonging to his missing brother, the sheriff, and accuses Curley of participating in his disappearance. Curley explains that he is an old friend of Sheriff Gordon and has recently purchased the Flying Ace Ranch. Convinced of Curley's innocence, Joe Moore, another rancher, informs him and his foreman, Sam Hawkins, that attacks on supply wagons are forcing the ranchers off their land. Joe then starts to tell the men about a hidden cache of money, but is shot from outside before he can reveal the hiding place. Before he dies, Joe draws a pair of horns over a bar, which the other men assume is a brand. Curley and Sam bring Joe's body into town. There Bolton offers to sell Curley some supplies, pointing out that everybody must buy their goods from him. Curley, however, refuses to deal with him. Unknown to the townspeople, Bolton has an arrangement with a combine in Chicago and, worried that Curley might interfere with his plans, orders his men to frame him for Joe's death. When Walter refuses to arrest Curley, Bolton sends for U. S. Marshal Dawes. Curley soon realizes that Bolton has a spy among the besieged ranchers. Later, Curley spots a set of steer horns over the bar in Bolton's saloon, and learning that the horns once belonged to Gordon, surmises that Joe's drawing referred to them. That night, Curley and Sam sneak into the bar and examine the horns. When they are discovered by the bartender, Sam escapes, but Curley does not and is arrested by Dawes for Joe's murder. Curley, who has found the missing rancher's money inside the horns, then escapes from jail with Walter's help. Later, Curley and Walter plan a trap for Bolton. While Curley drives a decoy wagon to lure Bolton's men, Sam drives a wagon load of supplies to the ranchers. Curley finds a piece of torn cloth on the roadside and near it, the tracks of an Indian drag. He follows the tracks to a miner's shack, where the missing Gordon is recovering from wounds suffered during his abduction. Gordon deputizes Curley, who arrests Bolton. Dawes, who has talked with Gordon in the meantime, realizes that Bolton, not Curley, is guilty of Joe's murder and arrests the gambler. Now that Bolton's gang is headed for prison, the ranchers make a new start.
