Synopsis
In the early 1840s, near Fort Leavenworth in the Missouri Territory, guide Monte Hale assists in the capture of outlaw Jake Stoner. Later, in a saloon in Leavenworth, Kit Carson, Monte's mentor, learns that Stoner is swearing revenge on Monte. Kit congratulates Monte on his work just as three gunmen break Stoner out of jail. Kit tells Monte that they cannot join the posse to recapture Stoner as Lt. John Fremont needs their services as guides on a expedition to Oregon. On his way to Fort Bridger, a small stockade in the northwest, Monte is spotted by Stoner. Before he can settle his score with Monte, however, Stoner's henchmen intervene, reminding Stoner that they must keep a rendezvous with their boss, Gregg Thurston, who intends to establish an empire of his own in the territory. Thurston, who is Jim Bridger's aide at the fort, later reveals to Stoner that Bridger is expecting a wagon train loaded with guns and ammunition, which he intends to hijack. Unknown to Thurston, his fiancée, Sally Dunn is traveling with the wagon train. Monte happens upon the gang's ambush of the wagon train and is able to drive them off. Later, at the fort, Thurston greets the unsuspecting Monte, an old friend with whom he grew up. Before leaving the fort on a short excursion, Bridger gives Monte a key to the warehouse where the guns and ammunition have been secured and tells him that Thurston has the only other key. During a party in Sally's honor, Thurston's men open up the warehouse, but Monte interrupts the robbery when goes to the warehouse for more cider. Stoner pistol whips Monte and the gang escapes with the rifles and gun powder. Monte, now suspicious of Thurston, follows him to a cave, where Thurston draws a gun on him and tells him that he intends to trade the rifles with the local Indians in return for their help in establishing his empire. Thurston knocks Monte out, ties him up and leaves him in the cave. Thurston tells Sally about an Indian missionary who can marry them, and they ride out to meet him. Along the way, Thurston asks Sally to watch the horses while he goes to meet with his men. Suspicious, Sally follows him and overhears him plotting with Stoner to kill Bridger and Fremont. Stoner sees Sally and captures her, but Thurston struggles with him and Sally escapes. Thurston then tells Stoner that they will soon take over the fort. Monte, who has escaped from the cave, follows Stoner to the Indian village, and listens as Stoner promises to help the Indians keep their traditional hunting grounds by supplying them with rifles. When Monte tells the chief that Stoner is lying, the chief decides they must engage in a gun duel to determine who is telling the truth. As instructed, Monte and Stoner begin riding toward each other from three hundred paces, ready to shoot. Monte shoots and kills Stoner. After the chief tells Monte about Thurston's plan to attack the fort, Monte sets out after the troops who have left with Fremont. Upon reaching them, he turns them back to the fort where Thurston has locked Sally in the warehouse. Monte blasts open the fort's gate and the troops retake the fort. Thurston then hides in the warehouse, but Monte finds him and, in a gunfight, kills him. Later, Monte and Sally make plans to meet soon in St. Louis, their hometown.
