Synopsis
Upon receiving their degrees from the Budapest University, four young television engineers agree to pool their intellectual resources in a combined effort to transform modern society with new social concepts. Although they are part of a Communist society, they see themselves first and foremost as engineers. Filled with youthful ardor and enthusiasm, they are so determined to abolish the antiquated ways of their older, more experienced colleagues that they are not discouraged when they are sent to different departments. During a brief holiday, they visit a resort where they share a flirtation. One of the young men, János, is haunted by the image of a young law school graduate, Éva, whose views on the ethical standards of modern society had impressed the engineers when they watched her on the monitor screens of a television car. On New Year's Eve, János meets Éva, and they celebrate together, falling madly in love. Then, one of the engineers is stricken with leukemia and dies. Shocked by this senseless waste of life, János and Éva both plunge into their work in the hope of creating something useful for humanity that will give their life meaning. But their zeal gradually diminishes in the face of everyday sorrows and disappointments, and their love fades as they discover that they no longer inspire each other. For them, the age of illusions is over.
