Synopsis
During a world peace conference in Athens, the delegate from the United States, Granger Wellborne, and the Russian representative, Igor Strogoff, become involved in endless bickering that frustrates all hope of progress. As a solution, the ambassador from the tiny utopian country of Anzonia persuades the two men to settle their differences during a walking race from Athens to Paris, thereby affording the conference an opportunity to make headway in their absence. Although outraged by the ludicrous and undignified event, neither the U.S.S.R. nor the U. S. withdraws its man for fear of admitting defeat and losing face. Meanwhile, the contest is televised via Early Bird satellite and receives worldwide publicity. As the two diplomats walk the 1,500 miles without money or passports, they beg and steal food, sneak across borders, and even get drunk together; but there is no break in their bickering. By the time they reach Paris and collapse at the feet of General Charles de Gaulle, however, they have become friends. The race ends in a draw, while the other members of the conference who have postponed peace negotiations in order to devise rules for the contest, continue to argue.
