Synopsis

Hoping to continue his family tradition of caring for the Sentinel Light, Joshua Barker suggests that his daughter, Faith, marry Bill Reynolds, a local fisherman. Faith, on the other hand, hates the lighthouse and longs for pretty things and bright lights. Soon after she rebuffs Bill's shy proposal, John Temple's yacht stops at the lighthouse, and there is an instant and obvious attraction between John and Faith, to the annoyance of both her father and Winifred Blake. Over Joshua's violent objections Faith soon marries John, and family strife and news of John's slipping into his old ways cause Faith's mother, Letitia, to grieve, languish, and die. Losing his grip on reason. Joshua attacks Faith with an ax; she shoots him, and with this shock come remorse and a happy reconciliation among father, daughter, and son-in-law.
