Synopsis
In 1931 the workers in a Swedish paper mill in Ådalen go on a 25-week strike for higher pay. The strikers disagree on whether their tactics should remain passive or become violent. Kjell, the son of Harald Andersson, a striker with moderate views, often visits the home of the factory manager because the manager's wife is concerned about Kjell's education, and because he has fallen in love with their daughter Anna. Later, Anna confesses to her mother that she is pregnant by Kjell, and her mother forces her to go to Stockholm for an abortion. As the strike becomes more violent, Harald, who refuses to join the factory owners in bringing in strike-breakers, finds himself an outcast for his non-violent views. At the request of the owners, soldiers arrive in Ådalen to protect the factories. Harald organizes a peaceful demonstration, but the nervous soldiers open fire on the strikers, killing Harald and wounding others. Kjell, dealt a double blow by Anna's departure and by the death of his father, assumes his position as head of the family.
