Synopsis

Obadiah, a friendly recluse, lives in a shack on the grounds of a lumber company across the river from Manhattan in the shadow of the Queensboro Bridge. His daily routine includes milking his goat, exchanging the milk for other foods, and collecting and selling junk and paper. One day Obadiah discovers Monica, a young woman being beaten up by a man near the waterfront, and he takes her home. Obadiah's existence gradually changes as he begins to take care of Monica, feeding and clothing her, even stealing a coat for her. Her presence excites a group of derelicts, who slaughter and roast Obadiah's goat. Then the man from whom Obadiah saved Monica returns and takes her away, leaving Obadiah alone.
