Synopsis
Newsreel cameraman Scoop Adams has risen to the top of his profession through the talent of his young assistant, Dick Robinson, who receives little credit for his work. Dick's girl friend Connie realizes that Dick is not being acknowleged for his hard work and warns him that Scoop cannot be trusted. While photographing naval maneuvers one day, Scoop gets drunk, leaving Dick to do all the work. Later, it is discovered that Scoop neglected to label properly a film magazine, resulting in the double exposure of Dick's prize shot of a battleship ramming a submarine. Dick, who is not aware that Scoop is responsible for the damaged film, is fired by the company for the incident. Although Scoop tries to get him rehired, Scoop's boss, Crusty, insists that he find a new assistant. Dick's successor immediately proves incompetent when Dick and he are assigned to cover the flight of the Navy's new dirigible across the ocean. As the event begins, Scoop's new assistant realizes that he has left his telephoto lenses behind and rushes back to the base. Dick realizes what has happened, and, seizing the opportunity to prove his worth, locks the assistant up in sound truck and flies to the dirigible launch himself. Dick joins the helpless Scoop, but Scoop resents his presence and the two men engage in a fistfight, which Dick wins. When the dirigible crashes into the ocean, Dick wastes no time recording the incident on film. Dick finally receives the recognition long overdue him when the company offers him Scoop's job.
