Synopsis
After years of marriage, Julia Lambert, a successful actress in London, discovers that life with her producer-director husband, Michael, has become primarily a business arrangement. This depressing revelation is heightened by the fact that she is no longer young and is the mother of a son in college. Consequently, when she is openly and avidly pursued by her husband's young accountant, Tom Fennel, Julia easily succumbs to the boy's advances and becomes his mistress. After becoming indifferent to everything but her meetings with Tom, Julia is infuriated when her young lover introduces her to an ingenue, Avis, whom he suggests for a part in Michael's new play. Fully aware that Tom is infatuated with the girl, Julia insists Avis be given the role and then allows her to steal every scene during rehearsal. On opening night, however, Julia drops her mask and gives such a brilliant performance that Avis is completely overshadowed. She then chooses to avoid the opening night party in favor of going to her favorite restaurant and gorging herself on fattening foods. Michael finds her there and they both realize that their marriage--despite its problems--is fortified by their mutual love of the theater.
