Synopsis

Aguaviva, a small town in the Spanish province of Teruel but 20km from Bunuel's hometown of Calanda, has a big problem. The population is not what it used to be: in the 30s 2,000 people lived there, now the number is nearer 600 and so the mayor decides to take some remedial action. Immigrant families are invited to move in, with the hope of invigorating a community threatened by heavily depleted numbers. The portrait offered of the new inhabitants that arrive from Argentina and Romania as they seek to assimilate among those who have formed part of this rural society for decades, provides a telling commentary on the realities of what acceptance really means.
