Synopsis

When Elsie Green, a country girl, goes to the city to visit a rich uncle, the glittery atmosphere changes her into a social climber. She forgets all about Ward Roberts, her sweetheart back home, and delights in the pursuit of wealthy playboy Percy Morleigh. Then, her uncle, fed up with society, pretends to die, and leaves his estate to his brother. To Elsie, he leaves only a copy of Nathaniel Hawthorne's story, "Feathertop." When Elsie reads it, and then dreams that she and Percy are the story's main characters, she realizes that the mindless scarecrow who masquerades as a man is the prototype for Percy. She realizes, too, that her uncle wanted to teach her a lesson. As a result, she leaves the city and goes back to Ward, and then discovers that her uncle is still alive, but now leads a simple, happy life as a South Sea sailor.
