Synopsis
Chelkash, a well-known tramp and thief on the waterfront of a southern port, meets Gavrila, a simple young peasant. Gavrila, hoping to earn enough money to return to his village a free and independent man, accepts Chelkash's offer of a night's employment as an oarsman. Not until he has rowed out to sea with Chelkash does he realize that he is an accomplice in a robbery, and he is filled with fear. Chelkash warns him to keep silent and talks with him about the good peasant life. When they return to shore, the boat laden with goods stolen from a warehouse, Chelkash visits a smuggler. With the profits from the theft he pays Gavrila handsomely, but greed has now been awakened in the young man. Chelkash's plan to spend the remaining money in one night of revelry makes Gavrila mad with frustration, and he yearns to keep the entire sum for himself. They struggle, and, in a rage, Gavrila throws a rock at the departing Chelkash, knocking him to the ground. Terrified at what he has done, the young peasant drops to his knees and begs forgiveness. With disdain, Chelkash flings the money at the corrupted young man.
