Synopsis

Orphan Ruth Morgan and physician Allan Buchannan each leave their small town homes to find success in the big city, but tragedy strikes them both. Ruth falls in love with a wealthy playboy who betrays her, and Allan mistakenly prescribes a drug which causes a child's death. After he learns that his sister has been killed in a train accident, Allan goes to a river bank where he plans to commit suicide. There he meets Ruth, who has the same intention, but each dissuades the other. They decide to rebuild their lives and are able to marry when Allan is given a good job by a wealthy man for whom he has done a favor. Soon after their wedding, Ruth learns that their benefactor is the man who betrayed her. She tells Allan, who is devastated, but eventually they realize that the only way they can find happiness is by laying aside their pasts and starting life over.
