Synopsis
Pietro Guerrini, a middle-aged Italian rice farmer, suffers from an unhappy marriage. At the start of the planting season hundreds of migratory women come to work for him. When Pietro thinks that he recognizes Elena, one of the workers, he journeys to Milan and learns that she is his illegitimate daughter. Although he cannot admit their relationship to anyone, Pietro gives Elena special treatment, and his motives are misunderstood by the other workers, as well as by his wife and their nephew Mario. Mario tries to seduce Elena in his car, but she escapes and meets Gianni, an automobile mechanic, on the way back to camp. The two soon fall in love, but Gianni becomes jealous of Pietro. After Elena is saved from a fire by Pietro, the lovers quarrel and temporarily separate. At the harvest festival, Mario attempts to rape Elena, but Gianni, who has just learned the truth from Pietro, hears her screams and rescues her. In the ensuing struggle, Mario dies after being knocked unconscious. Pietro then tells Elena that she is his daughter and instructs Elena and Gianni to go away and marry, explaining that he will take the blame for Mario's death and claim self defense.
