Synopsis

Shiro Mishima is involved in a traffic accident in Tokyo in which a man is killed. Shiro is officially absolved of any guilt in the death, but his company, an import-export firm, transfers him to their branch in Aomori. Wracked by guilt, Shiro offers before he leaves to pay the man's widow, Yumiko, a monthly compensation. Yumiko refuses at first, but under pressure from her in-laws she accepts the payments. Trying to forget the accident, she returns to Aomori, which is her home town. She and Shiro meet several times, but she spurns his attempts to be friendly. Respecting Yumiko's wishes, Shiro applies for a transfer to his firm's Pakistan office. Yumiko begins to feel some affection for Shiro and agrees to go out with him. Just before he is to leave for Pakistan, Shiro confesses his love for Yumiko. She turns him away, but on the day of his departure she finds herself wanting to accompany him. They witness a traffic accident which reminds her so much of her husband that they part, realizing they can never become lovers.
