Synopsis
A desperately lonely, young night watchman interrupts thieves as he makes his rounds in a Stockholm shopping center. As they flee, the thieves knock over a mannequin, and the night watchman tenderly picks it up and takes it home with him, reporting it stolen. He begins to talk to the doll and brings it flowers. Eventually he falls hopelessly in love with the doll, and his yearning imagination brings it to life. Gradually the doll, the sole object of love in the young man's life, becomes more demanding and begins to dominate him. Too shy to buy her clothes, he steals a fur coat and a diamond bracelet. He neglects his job because he can't stand to be away from her. A pair of lovers in the apartment next door overhear him talking to the doll, and they steal the diamond bracelet while he is away. He protests, and the virile neighbor mocks him by caressing the doll. The night watchman shoots the intruder and then smashes the mannequin and throws the pieces into the river. When he returns to the apartment, he finds her waiting for him.
