Synopsis

Harry, a work-shy and selfish idler, is married to Erica, a wealthy woman who refuses to share her fortune with him. Harry takes advantage of Erica's frequent European vacations by picking up women and bringing them home. Erica, who is bisexual, returns and discovers Harry in bed with Christine, a playmate whom he found in New York City, and promptly makes Christine her own lover. The triangular affair ends abruptly when Harry, fearful of losing his income to his wife's new mate, shoots Christine and buries her along with the gun he used to kill her. He blackmails Erica into silence by vowing to produce the weapon (on which her fingerprints appear), thus forcing Erica to sell her estate and to make plans to leave the country. Erica refuses to depart without the revolver, so Harry reluctantly disinters Christine. Confronted in the garden by Erica with another gun, the couple shoot and kill each other, falling into the open grave. (The Shadow, a mysterious, devilish figure [invisible to the characters] dressed as a 1950's jazz musician, has seemingly been an off-stage force that led to Harry's demise. In a grim epilog, The Shadow guides Harry off through some trees--Harry apparently being the creation of his drug-inspired hallucination.)
