Synopsis
Each night in public squares, a band of gypsies perform a ballet drama based on an old Spanish legend. In the dance Don Diego, the lover of wealthy Isabelle, has been turned away by her father because he is considered unworthy, although he is given 3 years to improve his position. When the time is up and Don Diego fails to appear, Isabelle obeys her father and marries the Duke of Teruel. The day after the wedding, Don Diego reappears and, upon learning of the marriage, kills himself. Deranged by grief, Isabelle also commits suicide. Isa, the star of the dance troupe, is in the same position as the heroine of the ballet; she is pledged to marry Manuel, a man whom she does not love, while her true love, Diego, mysteriously disappeared 3 years before. Diego eventually returns, but Manuel kills him during the ballet performance. Isa then kills herself, and, true to the legend, the two lovers are buried side by side.
