Synopsis

Socialite Richard Beverly and Hubert Gordon are rivals for the affections of Myra Lewis. A drunken revel, contrived by Hubert to embarrass Richard in public, ends with the two spending the night at a bordello. Learning of the trick the next day, Richard fights Hubert, who hits his head on a rock after Richard fells him. Richard, thinking that he is a murderer, flees and becomes a dissipated drunk in a distant city, where he meets Merriam Givens, an unmarried woman with a child. Hoping to clear himself of disgrace so that he can marry Merriam, he writes home and learns that, although Hubert survived the accident, the prostitute Helen is pregnant as a result of their night together. Richard confides to Merriam, who tells him that the child she has raised is not hers and that he should return home to marry Helen. Upon his return he learns that Hubert, who has married Myra, is really the father of Helen's unborn child. Richard summons Merriam to his home to join in a joyous family reunion.
