Synopsis
Vali Myers, the Australian dancer, artist, and self-proclaimed witch, whose bohemian life on the Left Bank in Paris during the 1950's virtually launched the "beat" era, is the subject of this cinema verité study. Since 1956, Vali had been living near Positano, on the coast of Italy, with her husband, Rudi Rappold, an Austrian architect, in a cabin without electricity or plumbing. The film records her mode of life, which for 9 years was one of withdrawal and rustic simplicity. Clothed in tattered, brightly-colored costumes, she climbs over craggy coastal rocks; makes love to Rudi; paints in her Black Book of "inner mysteries"; takes a trip to Rosina and Naples, where crowds follow her through the streets; visits a nearby cave where Caroline, a protégée from New Zealand, is living; chants incantations of the occult; and, as a witch, administers love potions to a friend. She reminisces about the past, when the new postwar intelligentsia and artistic community in Paris rallied around her improvisational spirit. Photographs of her and old films of this period are included.
