Synopsis

In a Carpathian border village, at a monument erected to the heroic frontier guards of World War II, the school director Martsinyuk meets Olga Kosacheva, widow of the frontier guard commander. At the beginning of the war Martsinyuk had evacuated Olga and her little daughter, Tanya, from the village, but Olga had been captured and her daughter lost. After the war, Olga had left the village to live and work along the Volga. Martsinyuk learns that Mikhaylina Yasen, an older widow, adopted a lost child near the village at the beginning of the war. Over the years, Mikhaylina has been a devoted mother to the girl, whom she named Natasha. Martsinyuk visits Mikhaylina, and, unwilling to deceive the girl and her natural mother, she relates the story of Natasha's adoption. Natasha and her two mothers meet at last, and Mikhaylina finds the strength to give up the girl.
